Mining – get ready

Three years ago, our forestry industry was deep in the thick of things. With pine beetles on the left and falling softwood lumber prices on the right, the entire industry seemed content to sit (stuck?) in the middle and ride the US housing market to the finish line. You can write the rest of the story. Today, while the forestry industry steps up talk of cost-efficiencies and expanding markets, many of the forest industry field support businesses have turned to mining to make up their shortfall.

Curious, we looked closer and found that there are more than 160 mining companies working on projects here in Northern BC. If you’re surprised, you’re not alone. Largely, this activity has gone largely unreported in mainstream media who seem oddly pre-occupied with our attempts to woo the Chinese buy our wood.

Now, we need to come clean – we first started to dip our toes into the mining world last year by investing in three gold-plays. Our intent, at the time, was to buy and flip. We haven’t flipped yet. Instead, we’ve continued to do our own exploring.

Last month, I attended the two-day conference hosted by the Smithers Exploration Group. “Rock Talks”, covered all the mining projects and developments in the area. I left the conference excited by what I learned. The technical presentations underscored the rich geology in Northwest BC and there were numerous speakers from Government and from industry who spoke of the opportunities that existed in the region. Most surprising and refreshing was the presentation from a Provincial Government employee who made was what I call an “Alberta Presentation”: as a Government employee he was an advocate for the mining industry and brought with him an enthusiastic message of hope about the future of the region.
