Hotel rankings in the north
Fort St John, North Central, North Coast, North East, North West, Prince Rupert, Smithers Thursday, May 21st, 2009There’s been a recent interest in hotel building in the north. I’ve had the opportunity to see some of the new facilities and, after numerous bad beds, stinky rooms and paper thin walls, I’ve been pleasantly surprised. Here are my top three choices.
(1) Sunshine Inn – Smithers

A nice clean and simple hotel with large rooms, large washrooms and wall-mounted flat screen TV’s in each room. Upsides: include great pricing (rooms start at $99) and awesome beds. Downside: No restaurant or gym. Despite the lack of amenities, this is still my pick for the North.
(2) The Crest – Prince Rupert

The old stand-by remains one of our favourite places to stay. I’ve rated it lower this year because I’ve found it annoying that hotel management has resorted to using some of the downstairs rooms, while other rooms were being renovated. These downstairs rooms, on the way to the hot tub and gymnasium, are substandard by today’s standards. They desperately require new carpeting and new beds. Upside: Great rooms unless you wind up downstairs, as mentioned. The gym is small but great and the restaurant food is fantastic. Downside: Little to complain about.
(3) Stonebridge – Fort St John

For me, this is the best place to stay while in Fort St John. With room pricing starting at $99 it’s easy on company expense accounts – an important note because the northeast is the most expensive place to stay in the north. Upside: Without a doubt, the best gym in the north. Downside: None really. Unless you count that the bar didn’t have draft beer :) Apparently, millions went into renovating the Stonebridge. It shows.
